Spinal Decompression Treatment for Vehicle Accident Injuries

In this video, Dr. Bhejat Syed, of the Spring Spine Center in Spring, Texas discusses spinal decompression for the treatment of a herniated disk.

Disc herniations are very common injuries resulting from motor vehicle accident injuries, collisions or auto accidents.  Spinal decompression is a commonly used conservative treatment that places the patient in an anti-gravity position, which allows for the vertebra to be pulled apart and decompress the disc.  Simply stated, the vertebrae are the bones in your spine and the disk is the shock absorber between them.  Think of a disc like a jelly donut with a thicker outer wall, and more of a gelatinous substance on the inside.  When you pull the bones apart, it creates a negative pressure inside of the disc, which allows for the inside of the disc, or the nuclear material, to be pulled back into the disc.  This process allows for healing to occur.  Dr. Syed goes on to state that typically it takes around 20 visits over a six-week’s period of time to complete the healing.  Typical treatment begins with decompression, but also includes chiropractic manipulation and rehabilitation exercises the help strengthen the supporting muscles around the spine and reduce the chance of reinjury.  Again these are common vehicle accident injuries.
